What does 1000 hours on a tailwheel tire look like?

We’ve always advertised our Deluxe Tailwheel Tire as something that, for most pilots, will last essentially as long as you’re flying your airplane. We’ve got several hundred airplanes in the field flying our tire, but most folks seem to be too busy flying their airplanes and having a great time to send us any feedback. Until now.

One of our customers emailed us this photo, showing how the Deluxe Tire holds up after more than 1000 flying hours, mostly off of asphalt runways.

The tire on the right is new, if you couldn’t tell.

There’s a little bit of rubber missing, but the wear is nice and even, and the bearings are still in good condition.

As you can see, the Deluxe Tire shows very good durability and longevity. On top of that, it saves about 9 oz. of weight over the stock Van’s tire and swaps out the messy, cheap, maintenance-intensive bearings for premium quality sealed bearings. All-around, it’s a great tire that we recommend for any RV taildragger.

Of course, if you really want to get crazy, check out our Lightweight Tailwheel Tire, for even more weight reduction (and sex appeal).

As for the customer who submitted this awesome picture, he said that even though the old tire was still quite usable, “The new one tracks and rolls like a dream!  I think that I will need to replace this one more often in the future!”
